Amazon Product Image Requirements: The 2026 Seller Checklist

Amazon Product Image Requirements: The 2026 Seller Checklist

Why Amazon is strict about product images

Amazon suppresses listings with non-compliant images, and a suppressed listing simply stops appearing in search. Sellers usually discover this after sales flatline, not before. Knowing the amazon product image requirements cold is cheaper than learning them from a suppression email.

The rules exist because consistent, clean images keep shoppers buying. Amazon's own data ties bigger, zoomable photos to higher conversion - which is why the requirements push you toward large, white-background images.

Main image rules (the ones that get listings suppressed)

Your main image is the one shown in search results, and it has the strictest rules:

  • Pure white background - RGB 255,255,255, not off-white or light gray
  • The product must fill at least 85% of the frame
  • No text, logos, watermarks, borders or graphics of any kind
  • Show the actual product only - no boxes it does not ship with, no props
  • Photographic image, not an illustration or render (most categories)
  • No multiple angles or composite views in the main slot

Image size: 1000px is the floor, 2000px is the target

Amazon requires at least 500px on the longest side and recommends 1600px or larger. The number that actually matters is 1000px - that is the threshold where hover-zoom activates. Zoom lets shoppers inspect stitching, ports and labels, and it measurably lifts conversion.

Upload square images around 2000x2000px: large enough for crisp zoom, small enough to upload fast. Our free Amazon Product Image Optimizer pads any photo to a 2000x2000 white-background square and flags text overlays before Amazon does.

Secondary images: where you can actually sell

Slots 2 through 7 allow lifestyle shots, infographics, size charts and text overlays. Use them deliberately:

  • Slot 2: product in use, in context
  • Slot 3: infographic with 3-4 key benefits
  • Slot 4: dimensions and scale reference
  • Slot 5: close-up of the detail buyers ask about most
  • Slot 6-7: packaging, variations or compatibility chart

The pre-upload checklist

Before uploading any main image, verify: background is true white (sample the corner pixels), product fills 85% of frame, no watermark or text anywhere, file is at least 1600px on the long side, format is JPG or PNG, and color profile is sRGB. Two minutes of checking beats two weeks of suppressed sales.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Amazon product images be?

Minimum 500px on the longest side, but use 2000x2000px. Zoom activates at 1000px and works best around 2000px, and zoom improves conversion.

Why was my Amazon listing image rejected?

The usual causes: background is not pure white (255,255,255), the product fills less than 85% of the frame, or there is text, a logo or a watermark on the main image.

Can Amazon secondary images have text?

Yes. Only the main image bans text and graphics. Secondary slots can carry infographics, callouts and size charts - and good sellers use them heavily.

Does Amazon accept WebP images?

Upload JPG or PNG. JPG at high quality is the standard choice; convert WebP files before uploading.
