The sizes that matter, up front

Instagram crops or compresses anything that does not match its expected dimensions, so uploading the right size is the difference between crisp and mushy:

• Square post: 1080x1080px (1:1)
• Portrait post: 1080x1350px (4:5) - takes the most feed space, best engagement
• Landscape post: 1080x566px (1.91:1)
• Stories and Reels: 1080x1920px (9:16)
• Profile photo: 320x320px (displays as a circle - keep the subject centered)

Why Instagram makes your photos look worse

Instagram recompresses every upload to save bandwidth. Upload a 5 MB photo and it gets squeezed aggressively; the compressor decides what detail survives. You keep more control by doing the work yourself: resize to exactly 1080px wide and compress to a reasonable size before uploading, and Instagram's second pass has far less to destroy.

Uploading much larger than 1080px does not help - it gets scaled down anyway, and scaling plus recompression stacks two quality hits.

Portrait 4:5 is the format to default to

A 1080x1350 portrait post occupies about 30% more screen than a square and nearly double a landscape image. More screen time correlates with more engagement, which feeds the algorithm. Unless the composition demands width, shoot and crop for 4:5.
