Best Image Sizes for Instagram: The Complete 2026 Guide

The sizes that matter, up front
Instagram crops or compresses anything that does not match its expected dimensions, so uploading the right size is the difference between crisp and mushy:
- Square post: 1080x1080px (1:1)
- Portrait post: 1080x1350px (4:5) - takes the most feed space, best engagement
- Landscape post: 1080x566px (1.91:1)
- Stories and Reels: 1080x1920px (9:16)
- Profile photo: 320x320px (displays as a circle - keep the subject centered)
Why Instagram makes your photos look worse
Instagram recompresses every upload to save bandwidth. Upload a 5 MB photo and it gets squeezed aggressively; the compressor decides what detail survives. You keep more control by doing the work yourself: resize to exactly 1080px wide and compress to a reasonable size before uploading, and Instagram's second pass has far less to destroy.
Uploading much larger than 1080px does not help - it gets scaled down anyway, and scaling plus recompression stacks two quality hits.
Portrait 4:5 is the format to default to
A 1080x1350 portrait post occupies about 30% more screen than a square and nearly double a landscape image. More screen time correlates with more engagement, which feeds the algorithm. Unless the composition demands width, shoot and crop for 4:5.
Crop precisely with our free Image Cropper - it has fixed-ratio presets, so you frame the 4:5 crop yourself instead of letting Instagram guess.
Stories and Reels: respect the safe zones
Stories and Reels are 1080x1920, but the interface overlays eat into the canvas: the top 250px hosts your avatar and the bottom 250px hosts replies and CTAs. Keep text and key elements in the middle 1080x1420 area, or they will sit under buttons.
For Reels covers, remember the cover also displays cropped to 1:1 in your profile grid - center the title so it survives both crops.
The pre-upload workflow
Resize to exact dimensions (1080 wide for feed, 1080x1920 for Stories), crop to the target ratio deliberately, compress lightly (quality 85 - Instagram recompresses anyway, do not feed it artifacts), and upload over Wi-Fi with 'high quality uploads' enabled in settings. Thirty seconds of prep per image, permanently sharper grid.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best image size for Instagram posts?
1080px wide: 1080x1080 square, 1080x1350 portrait, or 1080x566 landscape. Portrait 4:5 earns the most feed space.
Why does Instagram blur my photos?
Aggressive recompression of oversized or wrongly-sized uploads. Resize to exactly 1080px wide and lightly compress before uploading so Instagram's compressor has less to do.
What ratio are Instagram Stories?
9:16 - exactly 1080x1920px. Keep text inside the middle of the frame; the top and bottom 250px sit under interface elements.
Should I upload PNG or JPG to Instagram?
JPG. Instagram converts everything to JPG on its servers anyway, so uploading JPG at quality 85+ gives you control over the conversion.
